Dress:
Safari attire is casual and comfortable. In the game lodges, the coast and country hotels, the emphasis is on informality and comfort. However, certain properties such as Mt Kenya Safari Club, require guests to dress formally for dinner. Your itineraries will indicate this wherever necessary. It will be useful to pack a sweater for the evenings which can be quite chilly and light cotton dresses or shirts for the warm days. For the business day in the cities, a shirt and tie for men and a business suit for ladies will be quite appropriate.
Health:
Whilst no inoculations are required for travelers from Europe and North America coming to safari in East Africa,it is advisable to consult your personal doctor before departure for advise on malaria prevention. Anti-malaria measures are strongly recommended especially when visiting areas outside the main cities. Most lodges and camps provide bed nets for night-time protection.
Visas:
Currently, an entry visa for Kenya is not required for travelers from most Western European and North American countries if staying for less than 30 days. For those requiring entry visas to Tanzania, they will generally be issued at the point of entry at a fee. Passport size photographs may be required. However, for more exact information, inquiries may be referred to the nearest Kenyan, Tanzanian or Ugandan Embassy or High Commission. Representatives of the United Kingdom may also have the required information.
Currency:
Traveler's Checks are the most convenient means of payment. US Dollars and UK Pounds are widely accepted along with other major international currencies. There are licensed "Forex Bureaus" in all major towns providing a generally better rate than banks. American Express, Visa, Master Card, JCB, Euro Card, Diners are among the major credit cards widely accepted in East Africa.
Security:
Like all major cities in the world, East Africa's towns are not free of crime, therefore prudence is necessary. All valuables including tickets, passports and other documents, should be kept in a safe place at all times. Most hotels and lodges will have safes in the rooms or at the reception. For personal safety, avoid walking in lonely areas. Travel insurance is recommended.
Photography:
Although film is available at most game lodges, it is recommended that you bring sufficient film for your safari with you. Always overestimate your requirements. A telephoto or zoom lens of 210mm to 300mm is recommended as well as UV filters and a dust cover for your camera. Bring spare batteries.
Food:
In East Africa, restaurants provide a wide variety of dishes ranging from European to Oriental and African. Speciality restaurants abound in all major towns. Our staff will be quite willing to provide information to suit your clients' needs.
Luggage:
On Safari, luggage should be kept to a minimum, therefore it is recommended that you store any extra luggage at your Nairobi hotel until the end of your safari. Soft bags are preferable, especially when using the smaller aircraft on domestic routes. On these flights, baggage allowance is limited to between 10-15kg per person.
Departure Tax:
Most departure taxes in the East African countries will be collected on your air ticket with an exception of Zanzibar where a tax of US$35.00 is payable upon departure at the airport.
